Preparing for the New Year

It’s been over a year since my last blog post so I guess it’s about time to start writing again. There are photos waiting to be shot, technology trends to reflect on and information worth summarizing and saving. I will try to do it all here.

But first things first. The blog is in need of an update.

  • The Titan theme has to be updated
    This was the only thing that couldn’t be updated automatically from within WordPress, but it is still an easy process. Download to computer and upload to server (make sure personal tweaks are kept) and… Done.
  • WordPress Plugins
    Almost all plugins were screaming about new updates. Click “update automatically” and a few seconds later everyone is happy again. The plugins I use are Akismet, Contact Form 7, Flickr Photo Album, Sociable and Google Analytics.
  • WordPress 2.8.6 -> 3.3
    Just press “update automatically” right? Wrong.

    Turns out I was running an old PHP version and an old MySQL version.Luckily the web hosting company I use were way ahead of me. Changing PHP versions was nothing more than a setting in the control panel. The MySQL switch took a bit more work. I had to export all the MySQL data (for all the databases I am using), kill the MySQL account and then create a new one with the correct version. When I imported all the data again I noticed that the newer MySQL version was using a different text encoding (UTF-8) and so some of my old posts got weird characters.

    With PHP and MySQL out of the way the update to WordPress 3.3 was a walk in the park.

And so with the blog updated and ready… here we go!
